IPS post on Nabucco project and the Middle East

My piece on this is here. Also archived here.
This piece was a quick out-take, if you like, from some of the research I dd for my presentation at the MEPC mini-conference Thursday.
Actually, I had wanted to write for IPS this week either on Hamas or on some of the broad regional implications of the US troop drawdown in Iraq. But my friend Jim Lobe, the editor who decides these things, said he had news stories coming in on both those topics so I should do my analysis on something else.
Ah well, I try to be flexible. (And as longtime JWN readers know, I have a long-lived interest in matters of logistics and their effect on geopolitics.)
More Hamas for them later, I’m sure. Also, more Iraq. I don’t think either of those stories is going to go away any time soon.

  1. The history of wining Iraqi oil is deep historical start. The German were interested in Iraqi oil as early as 1871, By 1894 Germany appointed a consul to Bagdad and to Mosul, Wilhelm II struck a deal with Sultan Abdul Hamid to construct a railway to connect the Turkish Konya to Baghdad and the Ottomans agreed to extend the railway to Basra, the germane wanted to extend the railroad to Kuwait and from Konya to Berlin.
Nevertheless, the Brits where more interested to hold and control their jewel in India and moved to get a place.Lawrence of Arabia” promised that Britain would help to set up an independent Arab state if the Iraqis revolted against the Turks. They lied, and occupied Iraq themselves in 1917. According to international agreements, the north of Iraq was to be occupied by France, but the British occupied that as well. A puppet monarchy was set up, with a constitution and a parliament. So the history repeat itself after 95 years. To understand Iraq and oil, there are Seven Oil Wars to Control Iraq
Now German come back to do their dream in Iraq again by Deutsche Bahn to Rebuild Iraqi Rail Network
Here some details from Iraqi source.

  2. Suicide bombings in Muslim Indonesia
What most intriguing part is we hear “Suicide bombing” all the time.
In Iraq, its coming as norm, with no track for the source of hundreds of incidents along 6 years, as what we seen with al-Hariri case.
there are many question paused of these sort of reports.
last month there was big explosion in Sader City the blame goes to Suicide bomber, but the scale and intensity of damage far from some one hide explosive belt on his body unless he is “Rambo” carrying 200kg explosives material on his waist.
As from the report and pictures seen the scale of Indonesian damage its unbelievable to put it on one person and call it is Suicide bombings, its laughable only half brain will say that.

  3. The theme of the opera is the liberation from bondage of slaves held by the ancient Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar (‘Nabucco’)…
Just one little detail you left out. In Verdi’s opera, the slaves are Jews. In fact Act I of the opera takes place in Jerusalem with the destruction of Solomon’s Temple.

  4. slaves are Jews
There is one fact JES did it mentioned, that Nebuchadnezzar II was a king who control and have obeyed by sounding small tribes. as norm in the history the king when feel his oredrs ignored or not respected he have his duty to give slap.
Nebuchadnezzar II went and arrested all the men who are adult(No women and no children) brought them to Babylon due to respectable behaviours toward the king and the kingdom.
Just like today US and third world countries, isn’t JES?

  5. By the rivers of babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered zion.
    When the wicked
    Carried us away in captivity
    Required from us a song
Now how shall we sing the lords song in a strange land
Let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart
Be acceptable in thy sight here tonight
By the rivers of babylon (dark tears of babylon)
There we sat down (you got to sing a song)
Ye-eah we wept, (sing a song of love)
When we remember zion. (yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah)
