Yesterday’s fierce battles near Najaf saw the tumultuous emergence and apparent defeat of what most sources now agree was a fervent, well-armed group of some 300-plus supporters of Ahmad al-Hasan, a man who claimed to be the “true” deputy of the Shiite twelfth Imam, the long-awaited Mahdi.
Note that adherence to, and longing for, the Mahdi is a common theme in Shite belief and practice. These latest Mahdists are not the same as Moqtada al-Sadr’s “Jaish al-Mahdi.” (Also, Mahdism transcends the Shiite-Sunni divide. It was also a powerful force in the anti-British movement in Sudan in the 19th century, where its adherents were mainly Sunnis with a Sufi flavor. Go figure.)
Haider al-Kaabi of Aswat al-Iraq (Voices of Iraq) yesterday published this fairly full account of the Najaf/Zarqaa events. And today, Aswat al-Iraq carries this update:
- More than 250 gunmen were killed in military operations in the holy Shiite city of Najaf, 160 km south of the capital Baghdad, Iraqi police sources said.
“Iraqi forces, backed by U.S. tanks and helicopters, killed 250-300 gunmen in fierce battles on Sunday in the area of al-Zarga in northeastern Najaf with members of the self-styled Ahmed al-Hassan Group,” an official police source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
Clashes had erupted when an Iraqi police and National Guard force raided at the early hours of Sunday a headquarters of the group of Ahmed al-Hassan, who claims to be the successor of Imam al-Mahdi, the 12th Imam (religious leader) highly revered by the Shiites.
Meanwhile, the U.S. army announced that two U.S. soldiers were killed when their helicopter gunship crashed in the violent clashes that continued for a whole day.
The U.S. army, in a statement, did not say why the chopper went down but it crashed in the same area that witnessed Sunday’s clashes.
A media spokesman for security forces in Najaf told reporters that the battle is over and fighters of Ahmed al-Hassan group were beaten after U.S. troops and Iraqi Scorpion Brigade took part in the clashes.
“The forces took control of the armed group camp and troops were combing the area,” the spokesman said, adding “the battle is over and calm will be restored to the area.”
“The raid was meant to arrest the group leader Ahmed al-Hassan but the strong resistance led the Iraqi forces to ask for support from the U.S. troops,” he said.
According to the agreement that transferred the security responsibility to the Iraqi army in Najaf on December 25, the Iraqi security forces may ask for support from the U.S. forces.
“Ahmed al-Hassan Supporters” is an extremist Shiite armed group that sought leadership over other Shiite groups after its leader claimed to be a deputy of the Shiite twelfth Imam, the Awaited Mahdi.
Al-Zarga area, the stronghold of Ahmed al-Hassan Supporters, is a rural area that is located outside Najaf.
Only last week, Iraqi security forces launched a wide-scale campaign to stem this extremist group.
The account also notes that many thousands of Shiite pilgrims are in the area for the observances of Ashura.

- If … reports concerning the involvement of Ahmad al-Hasan of Basra are correct, this would mean a qualitative change in the situation. In contrast to [Moqtada] Sadr, [Muhammad] Yaqubi and [Mahmud] Hasani, Hasan represents full-blown Mahdism. His message is that he is the representative of the Mahdi – the Messiah-like figure whose appearance all Shiites yearn for, as a sign of the start of the apocalypse. Hasan believes that he possesses “divine authority” (wilaya ilahiyya) and is in a position to overrule the traditional Shiite clergy in any issue of jurisprudence. In another divergence from Sadr, Yaqubi and Hasani, he completely dismisses the concept of legal interpretation (ijtihad) and demands that in legal questions where the Koran is ambiguous, the faithful should refer to him as the sole source of emulation. In contrast to the Sadrist radicals, he uses his lack of scholarly training as decisive proof of his divine status (“How would I, a person without religious education, otherwise be able to disseminate Islamic knowledge?”)
To back up his claims to religious authority Hasan employs several Shiite traditions concerning the coming of the Mahdi – among them prophecies that an “Ahmad from Basra” will appear shortly before the Mahdi himself. Ahmad al-Hasan also says he is “the Yemenite” (al-yamani) described by many Islamic sources as a sign of the Mahdi’s imminent emergence, and resolves the apparent contradiction as regards his own Basra origins by claiming that Yemen extends into Hijaz and that all Arabs are in fact “Yemenis”. And to prove his point that the apocalypse is near, he refers to the appearance of the forces of evil in the shape of Dajjal – the deceiver – whose incarnations he identifies as the US military forces in Iraq as well as the leading establishment of the Shiite clergy (Hasan has been particularly critical of the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani).
Hasan has been active in the south of Iraq, around Basra, Amara and Nasiriyya, since 2003, when he first declared his “revolt”. He has since been conspicuous in several clashes and disputations with small Sadrist splinter groups in that area. The traditional clergy have reportedly even accused him of links to the former regime. If it is indeed his followers that are currently fighting in such large numbers outside Najaf, this would mean that Mahdism has now entered Iraqi politics on a larger scale – with the inevitable evocation of past schismatic movements in Shiism similarly inspired at least to some extent by Mahdism, like Shaykhism and Babism, which for long periods during the nineteenth century created civil-war like conditions in Persia and the Ottoman provinces of Iraq.
I’ll just close by noting that the death in battle of such large numbers of people is a terrible, terrible tragedy. Would there not have been a better, less violent way to contain and end any threat this group might have posed to the surrounding society?
Any time of deep social and political and existential strife can incubate a large number of apocalyptic visions and end-time-ist groups. (The period of the Civil War in 17th century England that incubated the Quakers and tens of other new religious-social groupings of varying degrees of radicalism was a time of very similar religious and political turmoil. The main difference between that epoch and today’s Iraq is the horrendous lethality of today’s armaments— plus, of course, the looming presence and divide-and-rule interventions of a massively well-armed external power.)
If Iraq’s present turmoil continues, we should certainly expect more such groups to emerge… Also, despite the Iraqi officials’ present claims of total victory, it is possible that this group itself might re-emerge.
It is a tragedy for the people of Iraq that the leaders of their weak, powerless, and very widely distrusted “government” felt they could not deal with this Mahdist emergence without calling in the American forces.
How many of those killed in the date groves of Zarqaa were mown down from US helicopters, I wonder?

- The leader of an Iraqi cult who claimed to be the Mahdi, a messiah-like figure in Islam, was killed in a battle on Sunday near Najaf with hundreds of his followers, Iraq’s national security minister said on Monday.
Women and children who joined 600-700 of his “Soldiers of Heaven” on the outskirts of the Shi’ite holy city may be among the casualties, Shirwan al-Waeli told Reuters. All those people not killed were in detention, many of them wounded…
Also wondering if the media doesn’t get the math wrong.
What looks like subtraction might in fact be multiplication. For each “gunman” killed,
perhaps 4 new gunmen will emerge.
(Btw, got to love that word “gunman.” Does that make US soldiers “cannonmen”?)
So instead of “250 gunmen were killed,” maybe the headline should read “al Hassan Group Grows by 1000.”

And who wouldn’t? Because the numbers are like shining eyes out in the darkness.
The numbers of American dead for starters. On the 20th of January there were 12. A couple of days ago it was seven. Yesterday it was five. There are lots of threes. Etc. A website called the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count says the average for this month is nearly three per day. For last month it was nearly four per day. And so on.
Now if you’re of a certain age – and I am – Vietnam is the yardstick for this sort of thing. For a long time there were half a million American soldiers there and approximately a hundred of them being “wasted” – funny how the language never lies – every week was par for the course.
Now fit the numbers together. There’s what, approximately 140k American soldiers in Iraq today. You have to multiply that figure by three and a half to get the half million soldiers in the Nam. The which means that to get a fair comparison you need to multiply the number of American KIA in Iraq by three and a half.
Do that and you make a chlling discovery. Namely that on a per capita basis our youngsters are being killed at more or less the same rate that American kids were dying in the Nam.
And when you bear in mind that many more of them are “surviving” injuries that would have been fatal in the Nam – surviving because of improved battlefield medical treatment – well, there’s no question that this thing is as filthy as Vietnam was at its worst.
And speaking of the “wounded”, those figures are also nightmarish. As per my above – the point’s often been made that there are thousands of GI “survivors” who would have died in Vietnam. Terrible brain injuries. Multiple amputees. Etc. They’re the “living dead” – and there are far more of them – at least on a per capita basis – than there were in Vietnam.
Also, does anyone really know what the true figures are? Both for the injured and for that matter for the dead. The figure for the injured that gets bandied about most regularly is somewhere in the 20,000 region. But there are other claims that push it up to way over 50k. And certainly there are indications that the figures are being “massaged” by the Pentagon. A little bit of creative accounting in order to put the best possible face on that aspect of this catastrophe.
We desperately need for this “new” congress to set up some hearings that drill right down – get people in there and get them testifying under oath as to what the true figures are.
And as an American citizen I don’t just want a “body count”, I want a dollars and cents count as well. Both the cost of this war – and some straight talk as to how it’s going to be paid for.
And while we’re at it, to what extent it’s lined Cheney’s pockets. For example. It’s fairly common knowledge that he had stock options that were worthless prior to the war. Options to buy at 50 dollars a share (this is from memory so the figures are an approximation). But not much point in buying at 50 bucks when the shares were languishing at 28 bucks. And then of course he got the war going – “we won the election, we’re owed” (what DOES that comment mean? what’s its “deep structure”?) – and lo and behold his options suddenly went from worthless to very valuable.
I came across a piece last night that claimed there was a 3000 percent increase on some of his “blind trust” holdings in one year – I think it said it was from 2004 to 2005. 3000 percent! Can that be true? Does anybody know? I mean, when you consider that “ordinary” investors are hugely pleased if a stock makes a 20 percent gain over the course of a year…well, words fail…
The time has come to turn this stone over properly and see what’s crawling around under there. It’s time for congress to do its job properly. Which by way of saying, as an American citizen I’ve had my fill of political cowardice.
I’m not even sure I’d bother summoning Cheney – well, I might do just to see what line he takes this time. I would certainly subpoena the “folks” who are handling his “blind trust” and get them testifying under oath.
Come on Conyers and the rest of you. The time has come.

The ghost at the banquet of course – in relation to all of the above – is the figures for the devastation, the mayhem, the deaths for the Iraqi people. Those figures, needless to say, are off the scale horrific.
What have we done? What have we turned into?
So Ahmad al-Hassan had a gang poised to attack pilgrims and shrines? A Shiite about to terrorize Shiites? Is there strong circumstancial evidence? Or is this the latest Enemy of the Month branding, courtesy of the Green Zone? How many Iraqi or Western sources make any prior mention of an Army of Heaven or The Army of the Sky? WAPO came up with the latter. It sounds wacky enough to excuse “Iraqi” troops (Sunni, Shiite, Kurd?) for mowing down 250 suspects. Might this be a template for future actions? Or was there really a 911 call to Najaf police HQ from concerned locals, followed by a nick in time response? Any surviving militiament from the heretic sect? Or was it a strange and inexplicable blessing that none survived? What are the credentials of the local coroner? Must be a touchy job. Priority #1: don’t end up on a slab yourself.

Massive returns on share options aren’t unusual due to their embedded leverage, which is why using ratios like ‘return’ doesnt make much sense when discussing them (what’s my ‘return’ if I’m given the options for free?) $50 calls on HAL would have made (then lost) a fortune for the owner over the last few years. But Cheney was never the constructive ower of his options — he’s legally assigned all proceeds to charity — the University of Wyoming , the medical faculty of GWU, and a DC educational fund.

The agreement states that it is “irrevocable and may not be terminated, waived or amended,” so the Cheney’s can’t take back their options later.

There has still not been any authoritative confirmation as to the loyalty of those killed, but it is noteworthy that followers of Ahmad al-Hasan (the Mahdist referred to in my article) last week complained about being harassed by local authorities in Najaf. The ulama of the holy cities have a centuries-long tradition for closing ranks against this kind of internal unorthodox dissidents, and the accusations about ties to Baathist etc. are quite predictable. The tendency of labelling anyone who is not an orthodox Shiite as a “terrorist” or “linked to foreign fighters” could potentially make for some nasty confrontations in the future, especially with the apparent policy turn in Washington towards increasing reliance on “selected” Shiites – who presumably get to define exactly what “orthodoxy” means.
In particular, it seems highly unclear whether Ahmad al-Hasan was personally present in Najaf (and whether he was killed, as some sources claim.) Other reports suggest that the “leader” killed was from the Middle Euphrates area, and that this may have been a field commander rather than the spiritual head of the Mahdists.
For what it is worth, what I kept hearing on the “news” yesterday was that it was “an Islamic cult consisting of both Sunnis and Shi’ites”. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

When all’s said and done, with loosened rules of engagement, I’d bet on 7 militants and 243 miscellaneous others unfortunate enough to be caught in the crossfire. وبقول علي عبد الله الحاتمي: ” لقد كنا غاضبين جدًا من هؤلاء القتلة وهم من عصابة فيلق بدر بدون شك ولدى اقترابنا منهم ركضوا دون أن نبدأ في أي رمي للرصاص عليهم وكنا مسلحين كون الطريق مخيف خاصة في الليل ونحمل سلاحًا لحماية أنفسنا، وبدأت نقطة التفتيش التي واجهناها في إطلاق النار الكثيف علينا وسقط منا أكثر من عشرين شخصًا ثم قمنا نحن بإطلاق النار عليهم وتبادلنا هذا الإطلاق للنيران لمدة عشرة دقائق وفزعت معنا عشيرة آل خزعل كونهم حلف معنا في الحرب والسلم، وقامت تلك النقطة بالاتصال بقيادة الجيش العراقي والشرطة وأبلغوهما بأن القاعده تقوم بالهجوم الآن من كل الاتجاهات وأن عناصرها يحملون أسلحه متطورة، وما هي إلا ربع ساعة حتى تقدمت تلك القوات باتجاهنا وحاصرتنا في البساتين وقامت بإطلاق النار علينا ونحن بدورنا مع الخزاعلة قمنا بالتصدي لها، ثم وصلت مروحيات ومقاتلات أمريكية إلى المنطقة، وعندها علمنا أننا هلكنا لأن المروحيات قامت بإلقاء أوراق فوقنا تقول (إلى الإرهابيين سلموا أنفسكم قبل أن نقوم بقصف شامل للمنطقة)”.
ويكمل الشاهد سرده لما حدث قائلاً: “أثناء محاصرتنا وقتل عدد كبير منا وصل إلى أربعين شخصًا خلال ساعة واحدة تمكن الجيشان الأمريكي والعراقي من الوصول إلى بساتين الخزعلة وهناك عثروا على لافتات الموكب وفيها مكتوب ’يا مظلوم يا حسين يا أبا عبد الله الشفاعة‘ و لوحه كتب فيها ’موكب عزاء الحواتمه في الديوانية يعزي صاحب العصر والزمان باستشهاد أبي عبد الله الحسين‘، وتيقن أزلام إيران أننا لسنا من القاعدة بل شيعة، فقاموا باختراع تلك القصة العجيبة والتي عززها بيان مكتب القذر الحقير اليهودي السيستاني الذي عرف بعدائه لعشيرتنا العربية بسبب موقفها المعادي لإيران عندما قال مكتبه إن ضال مضل من شيعه أهل البيت يدعى أنه المهدي يقف على حدود المدينة المقدسة فاقطعوا رأس الفتنه وهو التصريح الذي قاله أبو كلل محافظ النجف ظهر يوم أمس”.
ويتابع الشاهد: “فمن أسقط المروحية الأمريكية؟ فبعد محاصرتنا وقتلنا وعدم السماح لنا بالخروج من مخابئنا كنا نتركز بين كنطرة البو جعيفر وبساتين طين خوير وكان الاحتلال والقوات العراقية يتقدمان صوبنا ويطلقان النار بكثافة كبيرة فما كان منا إلا أن أطلقنا النار عليهم بكثافة في كل الاتجاهات فاضطروا إلى التوقف لمدة ساعتين كاملتين، ولذا فإننا لا ندري هل أسقطت الطائرة بنيراننا أم بنيرانهم الصديقه لكننا كنا نرمي في الهواء أيضا بسلاح خفيف كلاشنكوف فقط ومن المستبعد أن تكون الطائرة أسقطت بنيراننا”.
ويردف: “وفي الساعة الرابعة بدأ تقدم جديد علينا وكان الجنود يسمعوننا نصرخ: ’يا أبا عبد الله يا حسين يا علي‘ في وقت واحد ولما عرفنا أنهم عازمون على قتلنا عن بكرة أبينا لطمس حقيقتنا اتفقنا على ضرب أي واحد يدخل بستان طين خوير أو كنطرة البو جعيفر وبالفعل عندما دخلوا قمنا بضربهم بشدة وأسقطنا منهم ما لا يقل عن عشرة جنود ثم قامت المروحيات بقصفنا وعندها قتل أغلبنا وتمكنت أنا من الفرار عن طريق لوفة البو عباس إلى طريق الكوفة القديم وكنت الناجي الوحيد من بين خمسه أشخاص فقط أما بقية رفاقي فكلهم قتلوا أو أسروا، وكان مجموع من قتل بحسب آخر علم لي بهم قبل فراري هو 121 شخصًا تقريبًا والبقية إما جرحوا أو أسروا، ولقد جعل المعتدون العملية تستمر لمدة يوم كامل وكان بإمكانهم القضاء علينا في ساعة واحدة ثم قالوا عنا أفغان وسعوديين ومصريين وهم يكرهون المصريين بسبب تصريحات القرضاوي الأخيرة ويكرهون السعوديين بسبب تصريحات ابن جبرين الأخيره ويكروهننا لأننا قتلنا أربعة إيرانين قبل أسبوع عندما جاءوا يبحثون عن بنات من العشيرة للمتعة ويكرهوننا لأننا ندين بالحب لصدام وتظاهرنا عند إعدامه وكان من بيننا اللواء الركن الطيار علاء الحاتمي الذي كان أحد أول أربعة طيارين قصفوا جزيرة خرج الإيرانية عام 1985 في معركة العراق مع إيران… هذا كل ما حدث ويشهد الله أنه لا جند السماء ولا جند الأرض ولا يحزنون، ومن أراد أن يصدق أن هذه الحقيقة فليصدق ومن أراد أن يبتلع ما روج له إعلام إيران فله ذلك”.
وفي متابعة المفكرة لهذا الأمر حصلنا على تصريحات للشيخ خلف عبد الحسين الخزعلي أحد شيوخ الخزاعله والذي قال: “قتلت الحكومة يوم أمس أكثر من 100 من عشيرة الحواتمة و33 من عشيرتنا الخزاعلة خلال الاشتباكات وقالوا في البداية إنهم قاعدة جماعة الزرقاوي وأنهم مصريون وسعوديون وأفغان ثم قالوا إنهم جماعة جند السماء وتابعين لشخص يقول إنه وصي المهدي المنتظر ولا أدري من أين جاءوا بتلك الأكاذيب عن فندق أحباب الحسين؟ ففي فندق أحباب الحسين الواقع وسط النجف تجمع أكثر من 13 صحافيًا بينهم الصحافي الأمريكي المشهور هوفمن سمث والصحافي العراقي أوس الخفاجي والذي قال في الساعة العاشرة من صباح يوم أمس: “كنا قد اتفقنا مع الجانب الأمريكي على التوجه إلى موقع الاشتباكات وتم تجهيز كاميرات وأجهزة SNG للبث المباشر لوكالة الNBC وتلفزيون آخر إلا أننا تفاجئنا بدخول قوة عراقية من مكتب محافظ النجف وأمرتنا بعدم مغادرة الفندق وقامت بإغلاق باب الفندق ومنعونا من التوجه إلى المكان لسبب غير معروف كما منعونا من إجراء أي لقاء مع أي عنصر أمن في المدينة إلا أن هوفمن كونه أمريكي كانت له صلاحية أن يفعل أي شيء فقام بالاتصال بمكتب السيماك الأمريكي وهو مكتب إعلامي وأبلغهم بالحادثة وجاء الأمريكيون فقاموا بأخذ هوفمن فقط مع الصحافين الأجانب وأخبرونا أنهم سيأخذون الأمريكيين إلى بغداد كون المنطقة خطرة، وعندها علمنا أن شيئًا قد حدث وبالفعل اتصلت بزملائي وعلمت أن قناة العراقيه فقط أرسلوا إليها لتغطية تصريحات الجنود العراقين وكيف يطلقون النار وإعطائها تصريحات لبثها لقادة عراقين”.
وعند الديوانية جاء النبأ اليقين ففي الساعة الثالثة من عصر اليوم وتحت تكتم شديد دخلت إلى الديوانية أربع وخمسون جثة لقتلى عشيرة الحواتمة العربية وتم دفنها في مقبرة الحواتمة الواقعة على بعد خمسة كيلومترات غرب الديوانية
وتمكن مراسلنا من الحصول على أسماء القتلى وهم كالتالي:
1. حسين سرهيد الحاتمي صاحب محل حلاقة في قرية الشافعية.
2.عدنان فرج كريم الحاتمي سائق أجرة قتل مع ابنه حاتم.
3.فراس مهيب عبد فلك الحاتمي طالب في كلية الإدارة والاقتصاد جامعة الديوانية المرحلة الثانية.
4.منصور حسن عتروش الحاتمي صاحب محل لبيع الدجاج في سوق المليحة.
5.كريم عبد محسن شوك الحاتمي يسكن حي الرشاد عند بناية البريد القديمة.
6.علي حسين الحاتمي طالب في الصف السادس الإعدادي في مدرسة الديوانية التجريبية.
7.مؤمن محمد الحاتمي صاحب تسجيلات كلمة ونغم في منطقة الحمزة.

وفي الديوانية عند منطقة عفك وفي مستشفى النجف سبعون قتيلًا وينقل مراسل المفكرة عن طبيب طلب عدم الإفصاح عن اسمه أن وفدًا من عشيرة الحواتمة والخزاعلة يتفاوض حاليًا مع محافظ النجف وشيروان الوائلي لتسلم جثث أبنائهم والتي تبلغ 70 جثة في مستشفى النجف بثلاجة حفظ الموتى.
وذكر مصدر أمني أن الوفد هدد بما لا تحمد عقابه إذا لم تسلم الجثث خلال أربع وعشرين ساعة خاصة أن من بينها أربع نساء وصبيان، منجد التميمي وأطوار بهجت ـ على خطى أطوار بهجت الصحافية العراقية التي حاولت كشف مسرحية تفجيرات سامراء ـ قتل الصحفي العراقي منجد التميمي وهو من أهالي مدينة النجف يسكن في حي الشرطة محلة 634 زقاق 14 دار 54 قتل بعد تصوير تلك الجثث في المستشفى.
وقال والد الصحافي إن ابنه قتل عند أفران الحسن في نفس الحي الذي يسكنه وتمت سرقة كاميرته وهاتفه الجوال، مؤكدًا أن القتيل يعمل بصفة مصور صحفي حر وهو ما يعرف بالعراق بصحافة القطعة أي أنه يصور ويعرض صوره على الوكالات لغرض نشرها ويتقاضى منها مبلغًا ماديًا جيدًا وهي وظيفة انتشرت كثيرًا في العراق بسبب أجورها العالية التي يتقاضاها الصحافي وهي أفضل من الارتباط بوكالة ذات راتب محدد.
ومما تفضح به مفكرة الإسلام هزلية وزيف هذه المسرحية الكشف عن حقيقة أنه في الساعة التاسعة صباح يوم الأحد خرج وزير الداخلية العراقي جواد البولاني وأعلن أن “المدينة المقدسة” تهاجم من قبل القاعدة، وفي الساعة التاسعة والربع خرج شيروان الوائلي وزير الأمن القومي وأعلن أنهم جماعة “جند السماء” أتباع رجل يدعي أنه وصي المهدي، ثم في الساعة التاسعة والنصف خرج مستشار الأمن القومي موفق الربيعي وأعلن أن المهاجمين هم سعوديون ومصريون وأفغان عرب يريدون قتل المراجع “العظام”.
وفي الساعة العاشرة عاد البولاني ليصحح كلامه الأول في محاولة ليكون متوافقًا مع زميله الوائلي فقال إنهم جماعة شيعية تحمل نفس فكر القاعدة “المتطرف” وتدعي أنهم من أتباع الإمام المهدي، ثم في الساعه العاشرة عاد الوائلي دون أن يعلم بأن رفيقه يصرح أيضًا من مكان ثان، وكان يحاول أن يصحح كلامه ليكون متوافقًا مع كلام زميله الأول وزير الداخلية البولاني فقال إنهم من القاعدة، وفي الحادية عشرة صباحًا خرج موفق الربيعي وقال إن الأنباء متضاربة عن عدد المهاجمين، وقال: “هؤلاء المهاجمون شرسون ولديهم أسلحة متطورة”.
وتعتبر عشيرة الحواتمه وعشيرة الخزاعله أو آل خزعل من أكبر العشائر العربية في جنوب العراق وهي ترفض إقامه أية علاقة مع حزب الحكيم أو حزب الدعوة وأعلنت في 13/7/2006 إهدار دم أي شخص من أبنائها يثبت انتماؤه إلى عصابات جيش المهدي أو فيلق بدر الصفوييْن إلا أنهم بقوا متمسكين بمذهبهم الشيعي ويعتبرون أنفسهم عرب أقحاح كما يذكر ذلك الشيخ أبو حسين الحاتمي، وينكرون سب الصحابه والطعن بعرض الرسول إلا أنهم يعتقدون بأحقية علي بالخلافة ويعتبرون الأمويين والعباسين اغتصبوا الخلافة من أهل البيت، كما ينتمى أغلبهم إلى حزب البعث ومنهم عبد الكريم الحاتمي عضو قيادة فرع حزب البعث لمدينة الديوانية واللواء الركن جعفر خير الدين الحاتمي والطيار علاء الحاتمي أحد أبرز الطيارين العراقيين الذي قيل إنه قام بمسح مدن إيرانية عن بكرة أبيها في عام 1985.
