Last night, in case you missed this momentous development, I put up three more months’ worth of JWN Golden Oldies into the G.O. pane on the front page here.
These ones come from July, August, and September last year. Check ’em out and tell me what you think!
(Sorry about a few items of spam in some of the Comments there. I am still working at deleting them. My advice for now: don’t click on the hyperlinks embedded into Commenters’ names there without having a good idea of where you’re actually going. But some of the discussions in the Comments boards there are really good, occasional spam notwithstanding)

  3. Searched your site for “Sudan” and found only a few scant and indirect references. I hear that many, many, many thousands are dying there. Does it qualify as genocide? Or is it more a case of “tsk, tsk, too bad” consigned to the dim fringe of history. Does the Arab world, hot with rage over some matters, know or opine at all on Sudan?

  4. John– I am really glad that you share my concern for what’s going on in Sudan. It’s true that I haven’t written much about it here… As a US/UK citizen my first focus is on the acts carried out by my government (and also, by major recipients of my taxpayer’s dollar), since those acts in which I, as the citizen of a democracy, feel directly implicated… These are also the actions that I have the most power (as well as responsibility) to correct.
    There is probably a lot more we could all do to help the people of Darfur and all the rest of Sudan. In general, lifting the trade restrictions that bar most African goods from access to US markets, would be an extremely helpful action that would considerably ease the burden of want inside African societies, and therefore the incidence of the livelihood-loss-related inter-group conflicts that provide the context for the atrocious/tragic things that we see happening in various parts of the continent.
    Human Rights Watch, on one of whose advisory committees I sit, considers that what’s happening in Darfur constitutes ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity but not necessarily genocide. Whatever it is, I’m hoping that we can find ways to persuade the Sudanese government to END it, and to restore the Darfuris to their homes and decent livelihoods.
    Meantime, I’m just hoping and praying that the peace process with South Sudan succeeds. Wouldn’t that be great?
