Good resources on Israel’s continuing Gaza assault

I’ve spent quite a bit of time following the Gaza tragedy on Twitter today. If you’re a member, my name there is helenacobban (strange, but true.) Twitter has this good aggregating facility, so to find everything that anyone there has tagged as “#gaza” go here.
If you’re a Twitter member and you want your contribs on Gaza to show up in the aggregator, just insert “#gaza” into the message.
From the #gaza channel there I learned from Laila el-Haddad that she and her dad are both scheduled to be on CNN at 10 p.m. and 10:30 tonight, EST. Her dad, Dr. Mousa el-Haddad, is a retired pediatrician born and raised in Gaza, now back living there. (Laila’s in the US right now.)
Also from her “tweets” there I got a link to this excellent article by veteran Gaza psychiatrist Eyad Sarraj, which conveys just a little what it’s like to be living in Gaza City right now.
I guess Twitter is one of the places where the new Israeli hasbara effort is trying to have an impact. So far, it seems to be incredibly heavy-handed. English Al-Jazeera is also using Twitter very helpfully– check it out here.
The Egyptian leftists seem to be using something called Jaiku as much as Twitter, but I simply can’t follow too many of these new things all at one time.

  1. That Twitter #gaza link is just about useless because more than half of the posts are just people shouting at each other or posting links to their favorite propaganda. But thanks for the heads-up re the CNN appearances — I’ll tune in.

  6. Just before Christmas apparently Hamas enacted an Islamic Sharia legal code for the people of Gaza restoring crucifixion? Must say it didn’t get much publicity at the time.
    It is to be hoped that this hideous Israeli action will this time prove to be decisive; that international peacekeepers PLUS the lawful security forces of the Palestinian Authority will be authorised by the UN to bring peace and security to Gaza; that Gaza will be reunited with the West Bank under the secular Palestinian Authority; that there will be an independent Palestinian state by the end of 2009
    and that this insanity that has been going on since Oslo will finally be brought to an end.

    By the way, Hamas as denied that report, which seems to be mainly on all the nasty Islamophobia websites like Little Green Footballs, for example.

  11. This whole thing is an attempt by various Israeli factions to improve their chances in the upcoming Israeli elections. The deaths of hundreds of Palestinians and several Israelis is irrelevant. Winning the elections, or at least not losing too badly, is the primary objective. And these people callthemselves civilized?

  12. Report was originally published just before Christmas by Al Hayat. Perhaps a front for the secular Palestinian Authority in collusion with Mossad?
    Whatever, doesn’t change the fact that Hamas has proved itself a callous, nasty, vicious exploiter of the Gaza palestinians in the service of its psychotic religious beliefs. Or perhaps the reports that Hamas has refused to allow Palestinian wounded to be treated in Egypt are not true either?

  14. Yes. Nothing provides a tonic like a little war somewhere. Tzipi, the spawn of the Irgun, is looking to cement an electoral victory. Israel is no different from the Russia that attacked the Chechens and cemented Putin’s victory.
    I watched Laila on CNN. Her father, speaking from Gaza, was especially effective in describing the situation there. A dignified, honorable man.
    Of course, in the interest of “balance” there was a ziojew from America who was “volunteering” in Israel who described the poor, innocent jews being “traumatized” (not killed) by Hamas rockets. She became especially emotional when describing the plight of the Russian jews squatting on Palestinian land, who cannot speak Hebrew, who can only speak Russian, and the comfort she brought to them. Bet some of them will be heading back to Russia at the earliest opportunity.
