It’s been almost an hour now since CNN called the election for Obama.
Virginia put it over the top and then, at the top of the hour, California came in like gangbusters.
Earlier than Virginia, of course, Pennsylvania and Ohio already came in for the O-man.
McCain made an excellent concession speech. Good for him. All those Republican hardliners and lawyers who were preparing legal challenges here and there were thereby rendered irrelevant.
We had about eight friends here in Charlottesville watching the TV returns with us. There were several whoops and hollers throughout the evening.
We’re still waiting on our local congressional race, where Tom Perriello looks to be just a whisker ahead of the dreadful Virgil Goode.
We’re also waiting on Obama’s victory speech, out of Grant Park in Chicago where there’s yet another massive crowd gathering to hear him.
It truly does feel as if history’s being made here in the United States this evening.
The road ahead is still long. But the road of a thousand miles begins with the first step. This is it.
Hallelujah.

Frank, I am ready for that crow meal!

Oh good. I started marinading the meat a couple of days ago.
Bread and Oil and Vinegar to start? Olives, Tabouleh, Hummus, ……
Sbigniew Brzezinski is giving this year’s Whitehead lecture at Chatham House. Speculating on how he will see the world and its challenges might provide us with a topic of conversation over Dinner.
Do suggest others. I am getting old and boring.
The victory speech was impressive in its ability to focus on the priorities.
Two wars and the worst financial crisis in a century.
UUUUUUUUfffff! – Brzezinski, Albright, Kissinger – Democrat criminals in place of the Republican ones. Foreign and military policy are definitely the downside of Obama.
McCain’s concession speech was very good. Quite gracious. If he had acted like that in the campaign he would have done better.
The victory speech was good. Too bad he felt compelled to include a bit of bellicose rhetoric in there. Kind of spoiled it for me, especially since I had just had a congratulatory phone call from a family I am close to in Pakistan.
PS Yeah, I know Kissinger is not a Democrat criminal. I got carried away. It is enough to say that I am not at all impressed with the foreign policy people Obama has gathered around himself. I mean, Dennis Ross?!
Seriously, it is a huge relief that McCain has lost, and the spectre of Palin in the oval office* has been laid to rest, for now at least. (*Interactive. Click on the objects in the room. Some of them have a different result each time, so click more than once. And be sure the sound is on!)
Obama has shown grace throughout the campaign. He is a person of reason, dignity, and humour. He appears to have warmth and an ability and willingness to connect to people. He speaks of collaboration far more than of confrontation. All in all a huge breath of fresh air after eight horrible years of George Bush.
Congratulation! Our European pols are going to look mighty pale during the next summit. Now you will at least look like the future, lets hope we can build it as well.
We can smile again, America .
We are ecstatic !!!
America you should be proud !!
This victory belongs to ALL decent peace loving people.
The weather was picture perfect, stock markets surged, jovial faces, it feels good .
